But thanks for the authentic-sounding crit, though, Dr G. To think I had chiaroscuro elements and shades of Bonnard. My favourite bit is the blurry speechmaker. Sort of coherent, innit. Replete.
So, er,
I like the ladders one. 'Ladders', you see, plural innit, cos there's, like, a LADDER, then there's like, a SHADOW of a ladder, then - and this is the REALLY clever bit - there's like, bricks, and they look a BIT LIKE A LADDER. Eh? Eh? See?
I like the 'crop circles' one cos it's got foreground and midground (sort of) and background, and there are circles everywhere (clever eh?). I don't know why that's nice but I find it so. It needs somethingr, I can see that, but I'm not sure what.
I also like the shadows and textures on 'number five' (that would make a nice painting), the personality and composition of 'look at me', and the way I've caught the people in the various tractor shots. (Apologies for the preeminence of tractors here. There were a lot about, and I was in a photo mood. Unavoidable.) 'Tractor jam' would be better if I'd caught the left and rightmost men's faces. It's about them, that one.
Also they look better in their big versions. Particularly 'Six Eight'. The colours could be better on that one but I like the fag man on his tiny tractor, with the other one in front. I'm going through a depth of field phase, as also evinced on 'Breather'. Just an interesting-looking bloke, hat on, foot up, kicking back.

Hi Ben,
I was just about to say I like Tractor Jam best because you only had the faces of the middle guys, then I read that you would have preferred to have the outer two faces showing as well. Just me, naturally, but I really like this photo because it has excellent composition and speaks volumes about continuity and community. I like its relaxed vibe - we'll be here, in this or any other jam, quite happily, for many a generation. The fact that the outer two aren't fully pictured seems to extend the chain out of the picture frame at both ends. Anyway, since Bonzo probably knows more than I about both ends, he might like to continue this critique while I away to a large bar of chocolate and to tidy your son's room before he arrives on Thursday. Indeed, speaking of both ends, a bottled smoothie had a bit of a problem and exploded in the night in his room (those labels mean what they say when they read best kept refrigerated and consume within 3 days, fact fans) -- I'd have paid good money to see that in a photo! Oh and by the way, it's just an idea, but my friend Elizabeth from New Zealand who lives here does a little column for her local rag back home, about England. How about giving yours a call, and seeing if they'd like some pics or a report on what's hot in Hastings? With enough ex-Brits around, they might go for it.
